Do you ever wish you had the self-discipline and ambition to achieve a specific goal you’ve set for yourself or create a better life yourself? I know the feeling. It felt almost impossible to get started and take the steps needed to get me on the path to creating the life I wanted for myself.

Self-discipline can be challenging at first, but with consistency, you can improve the quality of your life. Learning how to build and maintain self-discipline is a skill that you can carry with you throughout your life and is a great way to hold yourself accountable for reaching your goals.

By becoming a more disciplined person, you can benefit from this in your relationships, health, wellness, success, and other areas of your life. While you can’t solely depend on motivation, self-discipline will give you the push to take action and work towards achieving your goals. Here are 7 ways you can build and maintain your self-discipline!

VISUALIZE THE OUTCOME

Each day, take a moment to visualize yourself achieving every single goal you’ve set for yourself. Envision yourself thriving in your career, health, relationships, and other aspects of your life. How does that version of you make you feel? Knowing how achieving a goal will make you feel and its value in your life will help you stay motivated and disciplined to carry it through.

SAY YES TO DISCOMFORT

To build and maintain your self-discipline, you must do things differently from what you consider normal. Yes, this will cause some discomfort and may be challenging. However, when stepping outside of your comfort zone, you gain a new perspective of life and learn that you are capable of far more than you thought. So, whether it’s by doing something each day that you don’t want to do or by doing the most challenging task first on your to-do list, make this a daily habit that you carry with you through life!

CREATE NEW HABITS AND ROUTINES

Believe it not; your life is a reflection of your daily habits and routines. Therefore, if you’re striving for new things in life, you must make the changes needed to make it happen. Switching up your daily routines is a great way to form new habits that lead you down the path to creating healthy habits that make it easier to accomplish your goals. From the moment you wake up to the moment you end your day, be sure that you are mindful of how you spend your time and your decisions throughout the day.

SET ATTAINABLE GOALS

There isn’t anything wrong with shooting for the stars and setting big goals. However, you must be sure to set goals that you began working towards today. Being specific and realistic when setting goals will help you create a plan for achieving your goals. Writing down your goals in a planner is a great way to make monthly, weekly, and daily practices that help you take actionable steps towards everything you want. This Happy Planner is my go-to. REWARD YOURSELF

Building and maintaining self-discipline is a journey that allows you to evolve. The things that once seemed impossible to obtain will be your reality if you don’t give up. So reward yourself when you reach goals that you’ve set because you deserve it!

REMOVE DISTRACTIONS AND TEMPTATIONS

Another great way to build your self-discipline is by removing any distractions and temptations that will take your focus off your goals and values. If you are easily distracted, it would be best to remove anything that affects your ability to focus on the task at hand—for instance, putting your phone on silent and keeping it out of sight while working on important tasks to work effectively.

SHOW UP EVEN WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE IT

When you’re starting something new, you’re most likely motivated, filled with excitement, and ready to work towards achieving the goals you’ve set. On the other hand, there may be days where you won’t be as motivated as initially, or perhaps things aren’t going as planned. Being consistent is a crucial element to success, and those things that seem small will begin to make positive shifts in your life and collectively help you achieve your goals. Pushing past procrastination will help build your self-discipline and help you move towards your dreams by being consistent even when you don’t feel like it!
